Paul Bérenger Confirms Discussions with Certain MMM Members
Paul Bérenger was questioned about Chetan Baboolall's presence at his home this Tuesday, as the MMM deputy was alongside the "band of 16" during their press conference last Friday. The leader of the mauve party replied that many MMM members were unaware that such a "slip-up" would occur last week.
When asked about potential contacts with other MMM deputies after Monday's political bureau meeting, Paul Bérenger confirmed: "Yes," but added, "I will not provide you with all the details." He did not wish to reveal the names of the individuals involved, stating: "Everything has its responsibilities where we arrived."
During this press conference held at his home in Riverwalk, Floréal, he also briefly revisited the issue of corruption. Referring to this subject as one of the main reasons for his resignation as Deputy Prime Minister, he stated at the beginning of his press conference: "There is someone who reported to Ramgoolam that a phone conversation was recorded where a person in the Prime Minister’s Office was talking about Ravatomanga, Mamy… taking cash… there is a recording… according to this person who spoke with the Prime Minister… the Prime Minister said this is artificial intelligence…".
When pressed by journalists on this topic during the Q&A session, he added: "There are many millions at stake in this Mamy affair."
Paul Bérenger also emphasized that pride was not an issue in this situation. He repeatedly recalled having "flattered" the Prime Minister, particularly for the courage he showed during the presentation of the first budget of the Alliance of Change, as Minister of Finance.
"We need to reform the pension system, but who had the idea of creating an 'income support' for those aged 60 to 65? Guess who is that…", he pointed out.
