The MMM Holds Regional Meetings Awaiting the Central Committee
In the lead-up to the Central Committee meeting on Friday, March 27, the MMM has been hosting numerous regional meetings across the country. These internal consultations reflect strong anticipation among party members regarding the party's direction.
The Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM) has intensified its regional meetings in recent days, set against a backdrop of internal discussions and rising expectations among its members. These gatherings, which continued until Thursday (March 26), come just before a crucial Central Committee (CC) meeting that is seen as pivotal for the party's future direction.
On Wednesday, a meeting took place in constituency No. 17 in Curepipe, led by Ajay Gunness, and attended by many activists. The goal was to review recent political developments and engage with grassroots members. Reports suggest that constituencies Nos. 2 and 3 also held meetings that same evening. The resulting discussions indicate a trend: several members wish for the MMM to maintain its position within the government.
In constituency No. 20, a similar meeting was held, with Rajesh Bhagwan expressing confidence. According to attendees, he believed the discussions were progressing positively. Additional meetings have also been organized or scheduled in constituencies Nos. 1, 6, 8, and 19. In No. 8, a meeting was set for 5:30 PM, aimed at informing and reassuring members. "The work continues as usual," stated a source.
Conversely, no regional meeting took place this week in constituency No. 6 (Grand-Baie–Poudre-d’Or). The regional committee is scheduled for next Thursday, following the CC meeting. Despite this, MMM MP for the constituency, Ram Etwareea, claims to be in constant contact with party members, regularly visiting various localities and engaging with many supporters.
He indicates that a clear sentiment is emerging, with several members believing the party should remain in government, as the electorate has granted them that mandate. The MP also recalled a long-time member's testimony, expressing a desire not to experience another prolonged period in opposition.
Meanwhile, uncertainty lingers in constituency No. 18 due to the absence of Veda Baloomoody, who is currently overseas for health reasons. On the ground, some party loyalists are also calling for a swift meeting with leadership to gain clarity on the situation and upcoming decisions. "We are asking for a meeting soon because we need to know what is happening and who will decide," they expressed.
These regional consultations are taking place in a specific context, highlighted by the meeting this Friday. Reports indicate that this meeting has been moved up by one day to preempt tensions and avoid any potential disturbances, especially ahead of a large gathering scheduled for Saturday, led by Paul Bérenger. As the meetings continue, expectations are building around the CC. This Friday, all eyes will be on Ébène, at the Hennessy Park Hotel, where this crucial meeting for the future of the MMM will take place.
Reza Uteem: "This vote will be our supporters' choice"
MMM president Reza Uteem stated that the vote on Friday will be critical for the party's future within the government. Speaking on the evening of Thursday, March 26, he indicated that members of the Central Committee (CC) will be asked to decide on the MMM's position. "This vote will determine whether the MMM remains in government or not. It will be our supporters' choice," he declared.
Reza Uteem reminded that this consultation is occurring amid internal tensions, particularly following Aadil Ameer Meea's motion of vote submitted a few weeks ago. He noted that this initiative has fueled discussions within the party. However, he emphasized that the regional meetings held in recent days have revealed a clear trend. "In the recent regional meetings, supporters unanimously expressed their support," he asserted.
When asked about the status of MMM leader Paul Bérenger, Reza Uteem made clarifications. "There has never been any question of him leaving the MMM. Paul Bérenger is still the leader," he insisted.
Regarding any internal pressures related to the vote, the MMM president remained cautious. "We will know by Friday evening," he concluded.
